13 Days walk by Sufis from Delhi to Ajmer to Celebrate Annual Urs of Khawaja Gareeb Nawaz
Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti also popularly known as Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz was a beloved Sufi saint of the Chisti order. He is known to be the direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad. Born in Sistan (present-day Eastern Iran and Southern Afghanistan, he traveled all the way from Sistan to Lahore to Delhi, and finally settled in Ajmer, Rajasthan. His tomb in Ajmer, the Ajmer Sharif Dargah, is one of the holiest Islamic sites in the world. Muslims from across the world visit Dargah Sharif every year to offer their prayers. Not only Muslims, but people belonging to different religions visit this shrine throughout the year.
To celebrate the 810th Urs of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, people from different parts of the world arrive in Ajmer. Today, a gathering of Chhari jamat comprising of Mastans, Durveshes, Malangs, People of Sufi Tariqat and Lovers of Chistiya Gharana coming from different corners of India, who have been gathering together for 3-4 days in Delhi. This congregation of sufis will travel to Ajmer by foot in 13 days from Delhi. After the journey of 13 days, these people will arrive at Ana Sagar and then enter the shrine of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.
“The number of people in this journey to Ajmer are in thousands who come from different faiths or religions. This assembly shows the true color of the diversity of India”, said Mohan Chisti of Chhari Jamat Kolkata in Delhi.
These people travel to Ajmer on foot and the purpose is to give the message of love and peace to the world and send the message of brotherhood. The journey of these people starts at 2:00 in the night and they travel 25-30 kilometers every night and after that they take shelter where they prepare their food and rest. Many times people wait on the way to welcome them and arrange food and other things for these travellers and during their journey fairs are also held at many places. Upon their arrival, after 13 days in Ajmer, this group of people will participate and celebrate the 810 Urs of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti.
