Monument Honoring Sacrifice of Civilian Laborers Unveiled at Wat Yuan Cemetery, Kanchanaburi, Commemorating Heroes of Thailand Burma Railway

The monument at Wat Yuan cemetery Kanchanaburi, in memory of civilian laborers who sacrificed their lives during the construction of Thailand Burma Railway , held on 3 June 2023 was inaugurated by Mr. Boonyapat Chandraorai, the Vice – Governor of Kanchanaburi Province. The abbot of Wat Yuan Temple Kanchanaburi and Dr. Surin Janpian, president of Tourism Authority of Kanchanaburi participated as guests of honor. Sri. Aramugham Kandaswami, lone survivor civilIan worker attended the ceremony.

The program was jointly organized by Death Railway Interest Group Malaysia and Netaji Subhas Vision Thailand. Representatives of Arya Samaj Bangkok, Thailand, Thai Bharat Cultural Lodge and Thai Tamil Samajam also participated program.

The reality is 250,000 People of Indian Origin civilian labourers recruited by the Indian Independence League joined the prisoners of war for the fast construction of Thailand – Burma Railway, to help the Azad Hind Fauj of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose to transport soldiers and ammunition to India through Burma. Most of them were Tamils and it is estimated that 100,000 of them perished their lives .This monument is built over the grave containing the remains of thousands of these matyrs.
